Sportsman Corner Campground’s annual fishing derby was a huge success.

It took place this past weekend and, to the owners’ surprise, saw almost the same turnout as last year. Co-owner Howard Larkin says he expected a smaller number of anglers this year due to COVID-19 but that was not the case at all with 124 participants altogether. With the impressive turnout, they were once again able to donate over $5,000 to the Children’s Wish Foundation.

“It has always been something that is close to our hearts at Sportsman’s,” explains Larkin. “We just feel that it is such a good charity. It never takes a lot of effort, it’s just something that everybody enjoys doing, all eight of us owners. It’s really a fun thing to do and I think everybody that comes really enjoys the fact that it is for the Children’s Wish Foundation and they’re very, very generous (because of that).”

Larkin notes over the past ten years they have now raised $32,826.45 that has all gone to the Foundation. He says it makes it even better knowing the money is staying in the area. Larkin says one of the donors camps with them and they have gotten to know him a little bit which makes them even more eager to continue raising money every year.

Larkin adds they started something new this year.

“We added two categories this year for 12 and under, and 13-15,” says Larkin. “In each of those age groups, there were two categories, walleye and northern pike. The winner’s weight of his fish was 4.71 pounds in the Walleye, it was a beauty.”
