However, Portage Fire Chief Phil Carpenter reminds you there's more to think about.

"It's just a good time for everybody, when you change your clocks, to change the batteries in your smoke alarms," he says. "Because a smoke alarm is only good if it has good batteries in it."

Carpenter recommends being pro-active.

"Heaven forbid, if there is a fire, and you don't have a working smoke alarm, then it's of no value to you," he says. "So therefore, ensure that you have a new battery in it."
