The (Tupper Street) Family Resource Centre has a new Executive Director.

Melissa Morrison, who hails from Nova Scotia, is taking over the position.

She explains how she got involved.

“As part of coming to a new town, we have a young son. So, we got involved in the programming at the resource centre when we first moved here. That’s how I heard about it, and through other moms in the area. When the job posting came up, I thought, 'Why not? It fits with a lot of my background'.”

She started the job in March and has been making an impact since. Even though they’re working from home, they’ve been sharing tips on social media, doing phonecall outreach, and they have drop-offs planned door to door.

Morrison says they’re shortening their name.

“On paper, legally, they’re legally Tupper Street Family Resource Centre, but they’re not on Tupper Street.  So, we’ve dropped the Tupper Street. We’re going to move forward with just being known as the Family Resource Centre.”

She comes to the Resource Centre with a wealth experience from obtaining her Master's degree in business, a Master's in sports and exercise science, and running a non-profit for 12 years.

“The community in Portage is something we’ve never seen in all of the places we’ve been. Everyone is very willing to help each other out and lend a hand, which is nice to see. It’s a very welcoming place. So, we’ve enjoyed our time here so far.”
