Avery Harrison says she feels scared right before a big judo match, especially when she is matched up against someone bigger, older, with more experience.

That being said, she often still wins.

"I got gold in the Kenora tournament and then this week I got silver at the Portage tournament," says Harrison. "I won all my fights, but through points I got silver."

The eleven-year-old grade six student says her whole family participates in the sport. Her father (Ryan) and brother (Ashton) still compete, while her mother Natalie competed at one time. Avery says she doesn't remember why she first started competing, but she isn't stopping any time soon.

"I don't know, I guess it runs in the blood. My dad got me into it and I started falling in love with it, so I'm going to stay in it for a while," says Harrison. "I think this is my fourth year, or fifth year. I started as soon as I could which was the age of seven."

She says her main goal is to have fun, and she loves competing in tournaments. The next big event is the Manitoba Open which will happen May 4th in Winnipeg.
