Love it or hate it, Daylight Saving Time happens this weekend.  Officially we roll our clocks ahead 1 hour from 2am to 3am this Sunday, March 12th.  Honestly though, you're likely going to forget and wonder why your phone's time is different from your alarm clock and microwave.  Even if you're not a fan you can at least take pride in the fact that DST is Canadian!

That's right!  The first time DST was ever used was in Thunder Bay Ontario in July of 1908.  For us here in Manitoba however it wasn't until April 24th, 1916 that places like Brandon and Winnipeg began using it.  According to the April 3, 1916, edition of the Manitoba Free Press, Daylight Saving Time in Regina “proved so popular that bylaw now brings it into effect automatically”.

Today Daylight Saving Time is used in over 70 countries worldwide and affects over a billion people every year. The beginning and end dates vary from one country to another.  In Canada the only Province that doesn't recognize Daylight Saving Time is Saskatchewan which remains on Central Standard Time through the entire year.
