After the heat and humidity in the area yesterday, it was no surprise when a number of tornado warnings were issued for many areas of Manitoba last night. At 3 p.m. yesterday afternoon, it was 32 degrees in Portage and the humidex was at 42. Despite those conditions, Portage was spared from the turbulent weather that hit a few spots east of the community.

About 15 different warnings were issued last night and some of the areas hit included Beausejour, Selkirk and Fisher River. Some of the storms produced high winds, heavy rain, and large hail. Words like "potentially life-threatening" were used in some of the warnings and the emergency broadcast warning system was activated twice on our radio stations last night near 6 p.m.

Selkirk recorded 16.7mm of rain while Beausejour saw 15.5. Those amounts also came down in a short period of time. Damage was noted around Beausejour from high winds and an unconfirmed tornado touching down while numerous claims are expected from the large hail that fell near Fisher River.

The Town of Beausejour said on Facebook there was a sighting of a tornado in the southeast corner of the town and area residents took to Facebook to share about the storm, with many saying there was extensive damage throughout town including toppled trees, damaged rooftops and downed power lines.

"Attention!… due to multiple power lines down throughout the town, we are requesting people stay away from puddles as there are power lines down that could be energizing the puddles. We will update when we have more information," said the Beausejour Brokenhead Fire Department.
