The Manitoba Airshow is the latest event to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The show takes place in Southport and was going to commemorate Manitoba’s 150th birthday.

CEO of Southport Aerospace, Peggy May, talks about the cancellation.

“We were holding off as long as we could to make the decision because we had hoped that there would be a change in forecast and plans. As it’s looking now with school closing till the end of the year, we decided that we best make this decision.”

The airshow was shaping up to be one of the best they’ve held. It was slated to run on June 20th and 21st.

“All of the committees need to work together on a close-knit basis while planning an event of that scale. That, unfortunately, wouldn’t have been able to take place. It’s very hard to pull ideas and teams together when there’s social distancing.”

The airshow was going to be named one of Manitoba’s 150 events of the year. May says that they will now regroup and look ahead to a new opportunity.

The timeframe is open as to when Southport will host its next airshow.

“We’re looking at options. We’re waiting for the dust to settle, of course, airshows are cancelled across the globe as late as August. We’re waiting to see how things shape up and see if it’s possible to get one for next year.”
