With the City of Portage la Prairie’s 2023 budget needing $13.4 million in property taxes, city council has held a first reading to adjust property tax bills.

Councillor Joe Masi says for the majority of homeowners, their property tax amount should actually decrease compared to last year.

"Overall, in our financial plan, the City of Portage la Prairie residents should see, on an average home of $250,000, a slight decrease on their mill rate," explains Masi. "As well as business and commercial properties, we'll see a slight decrease on their mill rate and on their property taxes. It's a very good financial plan for our community this year.

He adds, since this is the first reading for the tax levy, nothing is set in stone as of yet. Masi invites the public to weigh in regarding their thoughts on the plan. He explains that they wanted to make sure that the new rates would help them achieve what they’re hoping to accomplish throughout the year while keeping tax rates as similar to last year as possible.

"The one thing I would highlight in our financial plan is the Saskatchewan Avenue rejuvenation project," notes Masi. "This is the largest project, capital wise, that we have at the moment in Portage and there is no tax property tax increase associated with the project."

Masi hopes that Portagers can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that, even though the project costs roughly $41 million, their property taxes will remain unaffected.

The 2023 tax payment deadline is July 31st. Taxpayers can pay in person at City Hall, drop off or mail a cheque, e-transfer, and by Pay Simply through their credit card.
