It's a wonderful, cooperative effort that took place in Portage la Prairie when Youth for Christ Youth Unlimited (YFCYU) was highlighted as the charity of choice yesterday for MCC Day. The local MCC Thrift Shop and Furniture Plus work together toward the effort.

These days are always held on a Tuesday. The shop donates $3,000 of proceeds raised to a local not-for-profit, and you as a community member are able to spend your money and thereby benefit the organization, too. Any donated items that you give to MCC can be specifically marked for the charity of the day, such as yesterday's Youth For Christ Youth Unlimited event. Those items' sales are put toward the donation.

MCC General Manager Kevin Hamm says they had a number of charity days already this year, but there was a little lull that occurred in the summertime.

"Now we've got three in a row," says Hamm. "We've got Youth for Christ Youth Unlimited. Next week, on Wednesday the 28th, we are doing a day for Herman Prior Activity Centre, and then on October the 4th, we're doing our final one of the year for Valley View Bible Camp."

YFCYU Executive Director Art Schroeder says the group's quite appreciative of the financial help from their day at MCC.

"That goes toward our programming that we do with our students," notes Schroeder. "That includes our summer program, after-school programs, our north end program, and Tupper Street programs -- it goes to all of our programs that we run throughout the year."
