Commercial fishing on Lake Manitoba is having a great year so far. President of the Lake Manitoba Commercial Fishermans Association Allan Gaudry says it couldn't be better.

"This winter the fishery is doing awesome," says Gaudry. "Lots of pickerel or walleye. The stocks are really good. Commercial fisheries are doing well this year and the prices are staying steady, everyone is really excited."

Gaudry says compared to previous seasons, this year seems like a bumper haul.

"Last winter it was harder to catch the pickerel but we could see an improvement from the years before when it was all jackfish," says Gaudry. "For years after a flood, fishing was pretty bleak around here. Commercial fishermen were ready to call it quits. Now the fishery has made a turnaround, better prices and the pickerel numbers are up again so everyone is happy."
