Property taxes in Portage la Prairie are due this week.

Cathie McFarlaneDirector of Corporate Services Cathie McFarlane explains what happens if you're late.

"If you don't pay your taxes by the due date, which is Wednesday the 31st, then you will be assessed a penalty," notes McFarlane. "The interest rate is 1.25 per cent, but that is the monthly interest rate. If you pay it in August, it would be 30-days interest at that rate. For a typical house and land worth $200,000, that would be about $30.56 a month."

She says the amount is calculated from the total of your property and school taxes. If you did not pay until December on a typical $200,000 home and property, for example, you would have to pay an extra $152.80.

McFarlane shares how many people make late payments.

"I would say the numbers are low in comparison with all the taxpayers," she continues. "And typically, people don't miss it. It's because, for whatever reason, they haven't had the funds in July."
