Island Park in Portage la Prairie will be the site of Canada Day festivities in two weeks.

Preparations are on schedule, and Mayor Ian MacKenzie points to an increase in participation by area residents in the last few years.

Like everyone else, the mayor's looking forward to the fireworks to end the day. They're slated for 10:30 p.m., and he assures there'll be plenty of entertainment along the shores of Crescent Lake before the show.

MacKenzie's excited childrens' entertainer Al Simmons will be among the featured entertainers this year. He says it's the first time a Juno Award winner has been part of Portage's celebration.
