The Portage Landfill Authority's given first reading to a by-law authorizing them to borrow up to $300,000.00 to go toward upgrading the 227 landfill site. The entire project's price tag is $620,000.00.

Landfill Authority Chair Walter Keryluk feels the work's been needed for many years, and a visit to the facility at Morden-Winkler last year confirmed it.

He wasn't surprised no opposed the debenture at yesterday's public hearing, noting the landfill isn't at the standard of other communities.

Even though they're still waiting for provincial approval, work at the landfill has begun, and should be complete within five months. Increased capability for office work on-site, as well as a maintenance section are among the improvements.
