The Portage Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) thrift store is continuing to hold "awareness weeks" to allow local shoppers to support charities in Portage la Prairie.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event, which is normally just a single day, has been extended so more customers can show their support. They were recently able to donate $3,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Plains (BBBS).

BBBS executive director Dawn Froese says they will be spending more time working with the MCC in order to hopefully raise more money.

"Big Brothers Big Sisters is having a week at the Portage MCC thrift and furniture plus stores, and so we're really excited," adds Froese. "This is our 9th year partnering with MCC."

The MCC sell donated clothing, furniture, and other household items to raise income while providing low cost goods to people in the community. Both the Thrift Shop and Furniture Plus also make contributions to a healthy environment by recycling items that might otherwise go to the landfill.

The Portage location plans on holding more events like this throughout the coming months and say to look for announcements of more awareness week coming soon.
