Manitoba Cattle Producers Association has won its battle against the province over its $2 per head cattle levy to support slaughter capacity expansion. Agriculture Minister Rosann Wowchuk has announced the levy will be refundable.
President Ken Crockatt says by making the levy refundable, the provincial government has taken a very important step in addressing producers' concerns.
Crockatt feels the association's staunch opposition to the non-refundable check-off played a major role in the province making the change.
He also feels producers will not ask for refunds en mass, instead taking a wait and see approach on how their money is invested.
Collection of the levy will begin September 1st at point of sale.
