The KGS Group's latest Flood Mitigation Study came in with over 1.1 billion dollars worth of recommendations recently. RM of Portage Reeve Kam Blight says the new report's a lot of what we already know.

"People kind of expected some of these recommendations were coming forward. It is an awful lot of money obviously, and it's going to take a lot of time for these improvements to take place -- and to get put in place -- but I guess you look at all the damages and costs that the previous 2 floods have created and cost us in this area, it would be nice to have some preventative and permanent infrastructure in place to protect us going forward."

Blight was asked if he feels this will solve the issue.

"I hope so. I do know they have a lot more research to do yet to push forward with certain recommendations that they have. This is a broad report, it covered a lot of different areas and didn't get into specifics of certain things such as improving the dykes along the Assiniboine River. But I think everyone here can agree that, that channel is needed for Lake St. Martin Lake Manitoba and something needs to be done there."

He adds they'll have to sit down and have another consultation process, which the RM of Portage will definitely be a part of.
