The Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs is calling for the Winnipeg Police Service to do a more thorough investigation after the suspicious death of a 22-year-old Sandy Bay First Nation woman.

Jaeda Vanderwal's unclothed body was found in a Winnipeg train yard on January 5, 2020. She was brought to a hospital where she died of complications shortly after arrival. The cause of death has been attributed to hypothermia but AMC says evidence points to physical and sexual trauma.

Grand Chief Arlen Dumas said in a release that this is a tragic case that is reminiscent of the death of Tina Fontaine in 2014. He adds it's "reprehensible how First Nations' women and girls continue to be mistreated and dismissed."

The family had additional questions and information for police but were told it would not be accepted it as her death was deemed not criminal. The family has also not received any calls since her death.

The case was handed over to the Province of Manitoba Victim Services and Winnipeg Police said there would be no further investigation

The AMC and First Nations Family Advocate Office have provided support to the Vanderwal family during this time.
