Those in the RM of Macdonald will begin paying more for their water and sewer services at the end of the week. Reeve Brad Erb says the new rates come into effect Friday, following approval by council last week.

"We had done a rate study, and there was a Public Utility Board hearing that took place. The PUB went back and formalized what we had basically requested. As such, we have given second and third reading to put the by-law into place for the new rates, and they'll take effect April first."

Erb notes the rate hikes led to some concerns at the public hearing, due to the substantial increases in some areas. La Salle and Oak Bluff's wastewater rates will see the biggest boost, at 333 per cent, as they increase to $1.30 per cubic metre, from 30 cents. Erb says the sizeable increase comes as a result of the amount of time since they last changed the rates, as well as new regulations under the Public Sector Accounting Board.

"The PSAB rules really had a huge impact on our rates. We're not hiding behind the fact there's significant increases. I know I analyzed my bill myself, and it would be about a 50 per cent increase on my water bill, based on my historical consumption, so they are significant."

Erb previously noted the average increase will be between 23 and 75 per cent, based on water usage. While there are increases in almost all rates, the RM has eliminated the quarterly charge for annual pump outs in all communities.
