The Central Plains Capitals couldn't take their second Manitoba Female Midget Hockey League Championship in a row.

They fell 3-1 in game 5 to the Yellowhead Chiefs, in Shoal Lake Saturday night. In a battle between the two top teams in the province. The game was scoreless after 1 period, until both clubs exchanged goals -- just over a minute apart -- in the second. Caps' forward Emily Upgang scored the Caps' only goal.

In the third, Yellowhead broke free of the tie with a very bouncy goal that found it's way behind Central Plains' netminder Mckenna Wild. Yellowhead would add one more before the end of the game, nailing the coffin closed on the Caps' season.

Caps' Head Coach Ferdi Nelissen says they had a chance to get the lead in the second period, but gives credit to their opponents.

"We did everything we could, and we couldn't find a way to do it, that's all. They played very well, at the end of the second period we were dominating there, and we missed two or 3 chances to go up, and that was the difference. Probably the turning point, (The Chiefs) got out of the second feeling like it was 1-1 and we felt it probably should've been 3-1. They're a good team, they just kept coming."

Nelissen says they'll be losing about 8 players to graduation next season, and he's extremely proud of his club.

"I really like the kids we have coming back, and I really like the kids we have coming from Bantam. At the end of the day, I'm so proud of that group of kids, they battled until the end and we held ourselves up and showed a lot of class."

The Central Plains Capitals Midget Teams' awards banquet is this week at the Canad Inns in Portage.
