The Portage la Prairie chapter of Youth For Christ (YFC) is asking the City to help support its services.

At last night's meeting, YFC executive director Art Schroeder asked council for $7,500 in annual funding. Schroeder says the money will help support YFC's programming.

"We're hoping this funding will be used for ongoing operations for the programs that we run," Schroeder says. "We have developed other partnerships throughout the community. We're hoping that this will be one that can continue to help, so that we can continue a wide variety of programs for the students of Portage la Prairie."

Schroeder says YFC offers various drop-in services for students ages 9-19 in Portage, including lunch and dinner programs. He says the organization is also in process of developing an indoor skate park.

"We hope that something will come from this," says Schroeder, noting more than 4,000 kids utilize YFC services every year. "If nothing else, we were able to let city council know about some of the programs we are currently operating and running within the city."

Deputy Mayor Brent Budz says the request will be considered during budget deliberations.
