It's been several months now since Portage la Prairie's youth city councillor took up the role.

Lasha Mackedenski was sworn in back in November and says her time so far in the position has been great, adding she has learned a lot about how municipal politics work and how council meetings translate into everyday life in the city.

"I think I have a stronger view about politics in general now and how influential it can be to get into politics, but also how interesting it is to see how the whole process works."

Mackedenski shares one of the important lessons she has picked at council meetings.

"It's really important to listen to as many people's opinions about issues as possible because everyone's coming from a different point of view and perspective and it can be really easy just to look at it your way."

Mackedenski recommends the role of youth councillor to teens who are interested in municipal politics and want to be involved in the community.
