Wet conditions continue to create some challenges for the RM of Portage la Prairie, when it comes to their gravel roads. Earlier in the summer Council issued a notice informing residents they were working to improve the road conditions, after ongoing rain left many of the province's gravel roads in rough shape. While that set of problems was addressed throughout the summer, Ward 3 Councillor Terry Simpson says they're now facing a similar issue once again, this time on Road 39 west, better known as Drive Inn Road, following a recent re-gravelling of the path.

"Now that we've had these rains, very slow gentle rains. They put gravel on last Thursday and Friday because they knew rain was coming. However, they didn't give it enough of a chance to be compacted by vehicles, so it kind of went sloppy and caused a bit of anxiety (for drivers)."

Tufford says they've already started the process of putting more gravel on the roads, noting they're going to be putting additional gravel on to avoid a similar situation. He says with no rain in the forecast, the gravel should be compacted well enough in time for the next rainfall.

The wet conditions left many municipalities working on their roads throughout the summer, especially during the storms seen earlier in year. Other municipal leaders were quite surprised at the poor conditions, given the relatively mild winter which would usually mean less damage to the roads during the spring thaw.
