Westlake-Gladstone Mayor David Single will be retiring at the end of his term in 16 months.

Single explains at the end of this term he'll have put in 20 years with the council and says it's just time to move on.

"Of course, I'm getting older as everybody is and it's just time to move along. I've thoroughly enjoyed it, I'm still enjoying it, but I'm getting my old-age pension and I want to have more time for my family, my farm and holidays."

He shares some highlights from his time in office.

"Getting the rural water to a good part of the municipality, and we hope to get more of it done this year although the grant will hasn't been finalized, is one highlight. I guess the other one would be amalgamation. I was in favour of it and I think we've done a pretty good job of moving it along, it's not completed yet but the majority of it is done and I personally think it was the right thing to do. I'm quite happy that it did happen."

Over his 20 years with the council, Single spent eight as a councillor, eight years as the reeve of the municipality and at the end of the term will have spent four years as mayor. He says over the years he has thoroughly enjoyed working with council and staff as well as rate-payers.
