The following is a summary of police activity in the Central Plains Area (Portage la Prairie, Treherne, Amaranth and the surrounding Rural Municipalities). The reporting dates are between 2016-08-29 and 2016-09-04. During this time period police responded to:

Aug 29th
Treherne RCMP responded to an abandoned vehicle, located west of Treherne on Hwy 2. The vehicle, a brown 2005 Nissan Murano SUV, had been left on the roadside overnight. The owner had returned the next day to find the windows smashed out of the vehicle. Investigators are asking for the assistance from the community to identify suspects, or to come forward with any knowledge of the incident.

Aug 30th
Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to the Portage Court Office, as a male who was presently in court, was known to have several outstanding warrants. Officers arrived and arrested Benjamin Joe (37 years old) for having five separate warrants. Joe was remanded into custody, and to be transported to British Columbia at a later date, where he would be appearing on the warrants.

Police are asking for the assistance of the community in locating a stolen ATV from the RM of North Norfolk. A black and grey 2006 Polaris Sportsman 500, last seen with Manitoba license plate 446U4, was stolen from a garage at a rural residence. The vehicle, along with several tools, was stolen some time overnight. Investigators are asking that anyone with knowledge of this incident contact their local police detachment.

Aug 31st
Portage la Prairie emergency services were all called to 13th Street NW around 3:13 AM, where a vehicle was engulfed in flames. It’s unknown at this time if the vehicle was intentionally set ablaze, or if mechanical/electrical problems led to the fire. The vehicle will be examined by experts in hopes of determining the cause. Sept 1st
Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to a collision in Southport, where a vehicle was believed to have struck a building. Officers arrived on scene and found a brown 2004 GMC Sierra imbedded in an office off of Manitoba Crescent. Patrols of the area resulted with investigators coming in contact with a male suspect (26 years old) who was highly intoxicated. Investigators linked the male to the vehicle and determined that he had been driving at the time of the collision. The male was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, and his subsequent breath samples were nearly double the legal limit. The accused was released from custody a short time later, and the vehicle was towed and impounded at the owner’s expense. It is unknown at this time how much the repairs to the building will cost.

Police are attempting to identify a suspect in relation to a break and enter, and theft, from inside an apartment at the Windsor Park Estates. A resident lost jewelry and cash from their wallet some time overnight, as a yet to be identified suspect entered the apartment and took the items. Investigators are asking for anyone with knowledge of this incident contact their local police detachment. Police remind tenants of apartments ensure that entrances to their buildings are secure from non-residents, and that their individual apartments are locked at all times.

Sept 2nd
A motorist was observed travelling at 146 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Hwy 16. The male driver (60 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $652.50.

Portage la Prairie RCMP were dispatched to an erratic driver who nearly struck another motorist near the Sobey’s grocery store. Officers patrolled the area for the suspect’s vehicle, which was located near 18th Street NW. As officers attempted to pull the vehicle over, the male driver (35 years old) stopped, and then ran from the vehicle. The suspect was caught a short time later, arrested, and held in custody until the following day. The male is facing several criminal and Highway Traffic Act charges which will be before the court at a later date.

Police were called to the Mid-Town Motor Inn, as two males, both of whom appeared very intoxicated, had just gotten into a van in the parking lot. Officers arrived in the area, and located the vehicle a short distance away. The driver (45 years old) was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. His subsequent breath samples were nearly 4 times the legal limit. The driver is to appear in court at a later date, and the vehicle was towed and impounded for a minimum of 60 days at the owner’s expense.

Sept 3rd
A motorist was pulled over in the early morning hours on Lorne Avenue, after they failed to dim their high beams when approaching the officer. Once in contact with the male driver (26 years old) it was quickly determined that he was under the influence of alcohol. The driver was arrested and taken into custody, where his subsequent breath samples were over the legal limit. The vehicle was towed and impounded for a period of 30 days, at the owner’s expense.

A motorist was observed travelling at 138 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Hwy 1. The male driver (65 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $548.25.

Sept 4th
Portage la Prairie RCMP were patrolling the area of Can Oat Road near the dog park, when they came upon a vehicle that was believed to have been involved with an earlier call to police. Officers came in contact with a female driver (20 years old) who was believed that have consumed alcohol recently. The female failed a roadside screening device, and was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle. The driver’s subsequent breath samples were over double the legal limit; the vehicle was towed and impounded for a minimum of 60 days, at the owner’s expense.

A motorist was observed travelling at 141 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Hwy 1. The male driver (29 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $586.75.
