The Portage Community Revitalization Corporation (PCRC) and Portage Urban Indigenous Peoples Coalition has a program focused to help Indigenous urban residents in Portage la Prairie.

Indigenous community coordinator Cornell Pashe says it's the result of funding that's been made available.

"Throughout the year, we've applied to Indigenous Services Canada for the Indigenous Community Support Fund," explains Pashe. "This fund helps the Indigenous communities and those organizations that would work with the urban Indigenous. It's to prepare and respond to COVID-19. Canada felt that the health, safety and well-being of all people in Canada, including First Nations, Inuit, and Métis, remain a top priority. Through our coalition and PCRC, we're able to access funding in order to provide that help, just to help those organizations that are resource providers in Portage la Prairie."

Pashe says that they've helped various groups in the past including the Portage Friendship Centre, Rest-A-Bit homeless shelter (now known as Portage Community Shelter), Portage Harm Reduction, Portage Family Abuse Prevention Centre, and more.

"In this project, we had decided that we would come up with a fresh food project that we would do out of the PCRC," adds Pashe. "We wanted to find out if there is a need for many urban Indigenous parents."
