It was 25 years ago yesterday that Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union, and that milestone has been recognized here in Portage la Prairie.

After the raising of the Ukrainian flag at City Hall yesterday, a luncheon celebration was held at the Ukrainian bandstand at Island Park. Organizers saw about 40 members of Portage's Ukrainian community attend. Co-organizer Genevieve Morris was thrilled with the turnout, noting it was a good opportunity for people to come together.

"It was very good. It's nice to see people we don't always see, that we know are in the Ukrainian community, but we don't interact with on a daily basis. It was good to see a lot of people come out and enjoy the social time."

Traditional music supplied by Tess and Joe Achtemichuk, and traditional dancing from Tessa Lupkowski, were all part of the event, as well as lots of food supplied by people attending. Morris says while the traditions brought people together, the most important part of the event was the sense of community.

"It's always important. Socializing is a big part of keeping together and knowing what's going on in our community and keeping ourselves in the loop. It's good that everyone took the time, and enjoyed some fellowship here after the flag raising."

The next event for the Ukrainian celebration committee is a banquet September 18th, to celebrate 125 years since Ukrainians started coming to Canada.
