Today sees the 15th annual Treherne Run For The Hills Marathon.

The event began this morning, and sees 465 runners taking part.

Melanie Wall's with the organizing committee.

"This our second-largest race in 15 years," she says. "Our largest race, I believe, was 2010 -- 502 runners.

Wall tells us how it came about.

"The community at large wanted to put Treherne on the map," she says. "So they tried to think of something big -- what would get people to our town, and put is on the map. And this is what they came up with back then."

Wall says it's a year in preparation, but it's worth it.

"This is probably the most rewarding volunteer experience I've been a part of," she says. "It's a lot of work building to it, but that day is just so much fun talking to these runners that are coming from all over the place. We actually have a runner from Kenya. He's coming to do the half-marathon."

The marathon should be finished by mid-afternoon.
