The Town of Stonewall will be upgrading its lagoon system with the support of federal and provincial grants through the Clean Water and Waste Water Fund (CWWF).

Deputy Mayor Clive Hinds says the total project cost will be about $4.6-million dollars, but Stonewall will only be responsible for 25 per cent -- or $1.15-million. Hinds says it's an important infrastructure upgrade the town needs, as it's a growing community. He says there are major construction projects underway in Stonewall that will see over 600 homes built, and about 70 suites for senior citizens.

"It's making sure that we have safe drinking water going forward," Hinds says. "... Another four to five years from now, we would have had to do something to our lagoon anyways. This fund will really help us get everything straight and proper for growth."

Hinds notes the process for funding approval for the lagoon upgrades is just underway, with the first priorities being completing and submitting the application to CWWF, then starting work as soon as possible. All CWWF funded projects must be completed prior to March 31, 2018.
