Today is the fourth annual celebration of RCMP day in Manitoba.

RCMP Day in Manitoba is an opportunity to commemorate and celebrate all of the members past and present who have selflessly served our province.

CST Larry Neufeld is the Media Relations Officer for the Portage la Prairie RCMP he says this day means a lot to them.

"We appreciate the fact that the public and the province understand what we do every day across this great province and country," says Neufeld. "We joined this organization to help people, and to get recognized for it is quite an awesome thing."

RCMP Day started in 2016 when Emerson MLA Cliff Graydon brought forward a private members bill.

Manitoba's RCMP has around 1,000 sworn officers and 500 civilian employees. Neufeld says they patrol the Central Pains area which encompasses Treherne and Amaranth.

"We have approximately 45 members on patrol, and we also have senior management as well as Sergeants, Staff Sergeants, and Inspectors," says Neufeld. "We also have several support workers that unfortunately don't get the recognition that they deserve. They're back there doing a great deal of work for us."

February 1st also marks the 110th anniversary of the Royal North-West Mounted Police becoming the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
