With bitter cold temperatures on the way for southeastern Manitoba, a spokesperson for CAA Manitoba advises drivers should have a well stocked emergency kit.

Roz Pulo says though much to the severe winter storm conditions are behind us, the roads are still slick. She has a few tips for the coming cold.

"Number one is plug in your vehicle tonight. That is going to be imperative to getting your car started in the morning. Check your extension cord so that you know that it is working properly. We've seen the storm in the last couple of days, we know that roads are still slippery and things can happen, you can get stranded."

Pulo says it is important to check weather and road conditions before heading out. She notes motorists should also have an emergency kit with enough supplies for everyone in the vehicle.

"We know that with Christmas coming up lots of folks will be traveling with families so make sure you have mitts, toques, blankets, some sort of source of heat like a candle, and food and water in your vehicle along with that. Again, enough to feed all of the people in your vehicle."

Pulo says the weather conditions can change quickly here in Manitoba and drivers need to be ready for anything. She notes this means having equipment for blizzard conditions as well as cold.

"With poor visibility, you want things like flares and when it is colder you are focused more on staying warm, but be prepared for both of those situations."
