It brought out the giving in Thanksgiving weekend this past Saturday afternoon at Convention Corner in Portage la Prairie when Spruce Drive Farms handed out free potatoes. Owner mark peters said it was the best of two choices.

"Well it's one of those situations where you've got the decision to either disk under your potatoes, or if it takes a little more to harvest them and give them away that feels a little better to do."

(L-R) Al Braun & Mark PetersAl Braun helped Peters out Saturday afternoon, and Peters says it was steady stream of people all morning.

"We tried to line it up right before Thanksgiving, and we're hoping to do this after all the other markets were done. We thought this would be a perfect time. And the weather's perfect, too, right now for this."

He notes it's their first time doing this in Portage.

"We've hauled some, too, to Winnipeg to different places like Salvation army, or Siloam Mission, or things like that."

Peters adds they're not sure if they will do it next year, since it all depends on how good the harvest is.
