A couple of Yellowquill School students presented at the School Board meeting last night in Portage la Prairie.

They talked about the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation's (MCIC) Middle Years Leadership Conference last month at Stride Place.

"We took a bus to Stride Place right when we got to school in the morning," says Alexis Kennedy. "They started by telling us what MCIC was all about and how we can create change. Then we did activities all through the afternoon. I liked the parts where we learned about public speaking and how different tones of voices can make speaking more interesting. We also did a teamwork thing where we had to build a tower of shoes, which was a lot of fun."

75 students from the Portage la Prairie School Division took part in day's activities. Kelsey Lavallee says there was a lot to take away from it.

"One of the big things that I think we all took away was that it's okay for girls to do the same things as girls, and the girls can do the same things as boys. We did this one activity where we had to write down what girls should be doing according to stereotypes, and we also did a list for the boys, then we would discuss all of our answers. We all saw how close we were in the end."

They both encourage other students to take part if they have the opportunity.
