Motorists passing by the intersection of River Road and Crescent Road East in Portage la Prairie will notice some new steel towers being erected.

Manitoba Hydro Media Relations Riley MacDonald says most are familiar with the related damage caused by the storm in October that took out plenty of Hydro equipment in the Portage area.

"Portage especially was hit hard," notes MacDonald. "In addition to the wooden poles that went down and the lines that went down, we had some steel transmission towers go down as well. So, we started repairing some of that stuff in November. We're continuing to do that, and are expecting it to be done in February."

MacDonald explains they have two transmission lines feeding power wherever possible in the province's communities. He says no one is currently without power, and the work's being done to completely ensure that there is power should one line be knocked out of commission. During the change, MacDonald adds, power will be connected seamlessly with no interruptions.

"The line is called BP 6 and 7," adds MacDonald. "From what I understand, everything that we're doing in that area, if it's large transmission towers, is related to that reliability."

Riley adds if you're driving by and you see somebody on the road, please be careful and drive slower.
