Manitoba is looking at the formation of a Coalition with its First Nations population. Portage la Prairie City Indigenous Community Coordinator Cornell Pashe was asked if he's involved in such an endeavour.

"We are," responds Pashe. "And that's just prior to the meeting in Toronto where our first night following the meeting we were able to look at establishing a Manitoba Coalition. So, we did sit with Winnipeg and the individuals and representatives that made up Winnipeg, Thompson, the Pas, Brandon and ourselves."

Pashe says he likes what Brandon's doing, and sees it as a model to follow after.

"Brandon calls their entity Brandon Urban Aboriginal People's Coalition," continues Pashe. "It's made up of a body of two representatives from city council, and four representatives who represent the community. They also have the school division and the Métis, as well as their Friendship Centre."

He adds there are 12 people altogether who sit in council chambers with an opening prayer by the elder in Brandon. Pashe says they discuss their agenda and issues that are urban and aboriginal. He notes all of that is then taken to a city council seeing as there are two council members onboard. Pashe says he'd like to see that happen here and on a provincial level.
