The St. Claude and Haywood Arena turned 50 years old recently.

A steak supper was held in celebration of the accomplishment, with the evening being highlighted by an amazing video about the arena's life. The St. Claud and Haywood Arena Board, Broomball committee, and St. Claude Minor Hockey all partnered to help bring the video to life.

"We did it to honour all the people in the community who played such a big part over the last 50 years," says Chris Laing, arena board member. "The arena was originally a Canada Centennial Grant arena that was primarily built by locals in St. Claude. It was the third steak supper that we've done to build up to this one, we wanted to have some trial runs so we weren't having a big event without any pre-knowledge. We really just thought it was a great idea to honour everybody."

The idea to create a video for the 50th Anniversary came about around a year ago and slowly came together.

"We contacted the St. Claude Archives, where all the information was supposed to be stored," says Laing. "We looked through them and were able to find about five photos and one 8mm reel that we weren't able to play because we didn't have a player. (To get more photos) we have a facebook page and put an add in our local paper, and we started with about five images and when we came up to the event we were up to about 300 images."

The video consists of many great things including hockey, broomball, agricultural events, centennial events held in 92', and many pictures of people in, and from, the community.

"It's been surreal to see some of the stuff," adds Laing. "The actual building of the arena that is on the 8mm is kind of a shocker. It's impressive to see we've been able to identify my grandpa in the video building it. He passed away in the 80's so that's pretty neat."

The anniversary video was put together by Tyler Green, a former St. Claude resident.
