You may see some people sitting on chairs beside the roadway monitoring your vehicle speed in Portage la Prairie. Speed Watch member Rose explains what they're doing.

"We're just a volunteer, and we're checking speeds on 5th Avenue SE going south. This is a provincial program through MPI. Just an education program to let people know they're speeding, they should be slowing down for community safety."

She describes results for this morning's survey.

"Not bad today, actually. We're going to be set up again this afternoon on Crescent road. We'll see a big difference. Faster."

Rose explains what she's doing with some paperwork during the monitoring time.

"We're auditing every vehicle that goes through as to what speed they are doing. These reports go to the RCMP and to the MPI. This is for statistical purposes, but also mainly community education. Trying to get people to slow down. We also do school zones sometime over the summer. Just trying to educate people."

She notes when people see them watching with the speed board set up beside them, they tend to slow down. The program's been going in Portage for about 19 years now, and works in association with Citizens On Patrol Program.
