As graduation season approaches, a local musician's song about that is getting some attention.

Lucien Spence wrote "Celebration" a year ago, to coincide with the Portage Learning and Literacy Centre's graduation. He's one of the students, so the song has a personal connection. Spence says his recording of it was funded by the Learning Centre, and talks about its focus.

"The song is for anybody that graduates from any kind of program. It doesn't necessarily mean school, but any kind of achievement that you do in your life, that's what this song is to promote. And to be proud, and to start a new journey in life -- that's what this song is about, celebrating that newfound life."

He acknowledges "Celebration" is a departure from his usual musical direction of dealing with indigenous issues.

"My other kind of music usually relates to first nation issues, and that stuff like that, but this song is open to any time of achievement. If you listen to the words, it'll tell you about being proud, and standing up, and your friends and family are going to be proud of you, and what you've accomplished. It's all about good things in the new journey in your life."

Here's "Celebration".
