The RM of St. Laurent has gathered organizers of the municipality's biggest events, in an effort to create a major celebration for the 150th anniversary of Canada's confederation. That's according to reeve Cheryl Smith, who says they've partnered with a number of experienced event organizers, including those involved with the Manipogo Festival, Oak Point Community Club Music Festival, Metis Festival, and the recreation centre. She says their goal is to create a huge event, including unique and traditional activities.

"We want to make this a very special event, and really bring people together in the communities in the municipality, as well as hopefully seeing some familiar family and friends coming back to St. Laurent for the celebrations."

The RM has contributed some funding to the event, and is also acting as the chair of the organizing committee. Smith says the federal government has grants available for Canada 150 events, and they're also hoping to see what's available through the provincial government. However, she says their event won't be contingent on funding from other levels of government.

"We have to. It's a big one and we need to do something to recognize it. We are the biggest Metis community. We have a very strong history being a part of confederation with Louis Riel and the Manitoba Act, so we need to celebrate this, make it a good event for everybody, and a lot of fun."

Smith has high hopes for the committee, given the members' backgrounds when it comes to planning successful events in the municipality.
