There weren't too many people who stopped in for the Portage la Prairie School Division's (PLPSD) public meeting for their preliminary budget last night at Portage Collegiate.

"It's disappointing that we don't have a larger number out here," says School Board Chair Murray McLenehan. "We want to give full transparency so it's important people attend, and they need to understand that the hard work of our staff -- everyone -- from the time they open the doors of the bus to the time that teacher closes the door after class, everyone is working their hardest to make the budget ago. So it's a little disappointing that we don't get more questions to get the message across."

The budget's seen quite the decrease in funding this year, but Hutterian Teacher in the PLPSD John Paramor feels they trustees have done well with what they have.

"I think the committee has done a really good job of trying to make a tough budget fit the needs of the students within the division. It was a lot of hard work on their behalf and I appreciate their efforts."

"It was a tough year and I commend the trustees," echoes Superintendent Todd Cuddington. "They looked at the budget from all angles and certainly took the taxpayers into account. They recognize there is a certain threshold and they wanted to stay under that without compromising the academics and the services that the division provides. I think all in all we came up with a budget we can be proud of."

The Board invites public response to the preliminary budget at their regular board meeting Thursday night. Individuals, or groups, wishing to make a budget presentation to the Board on must contact the School Division by calling 204-857-8756 no later than noon Thursday, and an appointment time will be set.
