After some delays, harvest is in full swing for many area producers. Macgregor area farmer Curtis Sims says the rain earlier in the season meant they had to wait for things to dry before they could begin taking their crops off the field. However, with the recent dry spell he notes they've been keeping busy, and are making good progress in their harvesting operations.

"Things are coming along nicely. Cereals are getting near the end. Some of the guys are doing oats, most of the wheat is off, and lots of the canola is coming off now too. Things are moving along quite nicely for that matter."

Sims says despite the excess moisture causing problems earlier in the season, they're looking forward to the weekend's showers. He notes they're working to see winter wheat, and a bit of rain would greatly assist that crop.

When it comes to the harvest itself, Sims says they're looking at an average year, much like many other farmers in the area. He says they're not looking at any substantial yields, but it's too early to judge beans and corn. However, Sims says they're optimistic about those crops, given their progress at this stage.

"From appearances the soybeans, corn, and edible beans seem to be maturing nicely. There's no frost in the forecast for quite a while, so they could mature quite nicely for us too."

He says the quality of this year's harvest seems to be on par with what's been seen in the past, noting both spring and winter wheat were fairly good.
