A new educational resource program aims to help senior citizens in rural Manitoba about some of the challenges they may face.

Coordinator Brenda Tonn says Police Academy Older Adults is organized in conjunction with RCMP and Manitoba Association of Senior Centres.

It covers topics such as: elder abuse, planning for future, personal safety, frauds and scams, safety aid and medication safety. Tonn says the program should help participants be more aware of issues concerning them, and provide tips to promote independent living.

"It's about protecting, educating and empowering them to be able to make decisions and live confidently on their own," she says. "It's important for seniors to be able to be provided with tips and tools to live independently, and be aware of support initiatives set up in their own communities."

Tonn hopes many different communities will take an interest in hosting sessions. Additional information is available by contacting Tonn via email at safeathome@mymts.net.
