For 44 years scout troops across Canada have planted trees every spring and the 5th Portage Cubs and Scouts took part in that tradition yesterday.Cub Leader Stacy Turner outlines the project.

"The City of Portage offered to help the 5th Portage Cubs and Scouts out and we planted some trees for them just north of the dog park."

She says it was a great hands-on learning opportunity for the scout troop.

"I think they had fun. It was really neat to learn why we planted the trees and how they will help the environment. It's kind of neat to plant them in your own city so that you can go back and watch them grow. We talked a little bit about what the trees will be able to help us out with like erosion and wind break. I think it was really cool. They had lots of fun and they did lots of running, jumping and playing so overall it was really good."

Scout Max Chappellaz shares what he learnt about the importe role trees play in our lives.

"I think it's important for the environment, for building shelter, for living and for a bunch of other stuff."
