Portagers are once again reminded to be on the lookout for scams. Recently several phone calls claiming to be from the Canadian Police Association requesting donations have been reported. Portage la Prairie RCMP Sergeant Brian Brewer says while the association is legitimate, those calling to request donations may not be. He says it's not uncommon for criminals to pose a legitimate organizations or groups, to try and solicit donations from potential victims.

"Using a police officers association that police officers that are having a difficult time, and helps put programs in place for police to create a better community, to use that good name or police in general to try and take advantage of people is really unfortunate."

He says anytime you receive a call, email, or letter requesting donations, you should always be vigilant. He says it's always best to ask for documentation to be sent, to help verify their claims. Brewer notes any legitimate charity or group would be happy to send you any details you request.

Many people who receive phone scams tend to ignore them, or simply brush them off. However, Brewer says you shouldn't hesitate to file a report, noting it not only helps the local police, but also prepare their national counterparts.

"At the local level, we like to know about it so we can educate people. At the national level, we can send  to Phone Busters so they can keep an eye on it."

Brewer also notes if an offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is, so you should always be wary of potential scams and fraud.
