With blowing snow conditions like we had today, if you get on the road and make a trip there are several safety tips to keep in mind in case you get stranded.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Natalie Hasell says, "Whether it's blizzarding or not, or blowing snow reducing visibilities or not, it's really important to remember that if you're on the highway and you get stranded the safest place to be is actually in your car. With these wind chills, exposed skin can freeze really quickly."

She explains every year people have ventured out thinking a location in the distance was closer than it actually was. Blowing snow can increase, visibilities are reduced to zero, and people are not only unable to reach their destination, but unable to return to their vehicles.

"Stay in your car," she says. "I hope you have an emergency kit in your car, so you can at least be a little more comfortable in the car while you wait things out. Make sure your phone is charged so you can call in case you are in that predicament. Then maybe somebody can help you out a little sooner than otherwise. Ensure your car is gassed up and you have all the fluids you're supposed to have in the car, and everything in your emergency kit's not expired. That way, if you have to be on the road, you can at least be a little bit safer and a little more comfortable."
