A Portage man is sharing stories of Belgium and beyond, after returning from a year in the country through the Rotary Exchange Student Program. Brendan Doan discussed his time in Europe during the weekly Rotary Luncheon, noting while he was stationed in Belgium he also had a chance to travel to 13 other European countries from Ireland to Romania. He describes the opportunity as a great experience, noting the change to take in European Culture was incredibly exciting. While many note the differences in cultural cuisine while travelling, Doan says even the way they handled food was vastly different from Canada.

Some of the items picked up during Brendan Doan's travels

"It was a lot fresher. You buy bread two or three times a week because there are no preservatives in it. As well, the milk, cheese and meat you eat come straight from the farm, and you go to a butcher shop or cheese shop, which specialize in that."

He also notes transportation in Europe is vastly different, describe the infrastructure for bus and rail transportation has amazing. During his time in Belgium, Doan was awarded the Rotary Club's Outstanding Exchange Student Award, for his outgoing approach to the program. He says that's something all students taking part in the program should keep in mind, in order to make the most of their experience.

"Some advice for the future exchange student, just go out of your comfort zone, say what you want to do, and don't be afraid to ask. Just get the most out of what you're doing."

While he intends to attend the University of Manitoba to study aeronautics, he hopes to one day return to Europe.
