The RM of Cartier is looking to shut down a truck loading facility for drinking water in the village of Springstein in order to achieve annual utility cost savings.

Cartier Reeve Dale Fossay says Springstein has had the standpipe in operation for about 20 years, but costs have increased to operate it and the use has become more limited.

"We're considering closing it as virtually all the folks in the area now have waterlines in front of their house," Fossay explains. "...The cost saving would be in the neighbourhood of $12,000 per year in the utility."

There are two other drinking water truck loading facilities close to Springstein. One is located in Starbuck, about six miles from the current site, and another is in the village of St. Francois Xavier.

The Public Utilities Board has called a public hearing to solicit input on the potential closure on March 23 at the Springstein Community Hall.
