The following is a summary of police activity in the Central Plains Area (Portage la Prairie, Treherne, Amaranth and the surrounding Rural Municipalities). The reporting dates are between March 27 and April 2, 2017. During this time period police responded to: 288 calls for service.

LIQUOR LOOTERS
Portage la Prairie RCMP were called to Liquor Mart on Saskatchewan Avenue March 27 after a male suspect stole two bottles of liquor. A good description of the suspect and his last direction of travel resulted in police locating him soon after having fled the store. The suspect was arrested for theft, and officers found the stolen liquor in his backpack. The 33 year old male from Winnipeg was released from police custody after a short time, and will appear in Portage Court at a later date.

On April 2, Portage la Prairie RCMP were call to Liquor Mart on Saskatchewan Avenue after two female suspects reportedly stole several bottles of liquor. The suspects had been involved with police earlier that day, and so officers were able to locate them very quickly. A 37 year old female from Gladstone and a 36 year old female from Winnipeg were arrested for theft, both of whom still had the stolen liquor in their possession. Both were released from police custody after a short time, set to appear in Portage Court at a later date.

CONVENIENCE STORE CROOK
Shortly before 2:00 a.m., on March 28 the Portage la Prairie RCMP received a call of shoplifting from 7-11 on the east side of the city. A male in his 20’s reportedly walked out of the store with a large amount of food, where he then got into a waiting vehicle. The vehicle was located, along with the suspect, who was arrested for theft. The 29 year old male from Brandon was released from police custody after a short time, and will appear in Portage Court at a later date.

ATV THEFT
A rural property in the RM of Westlake-Gladstone was broken into overnight March 28, with an ATV being stolen from a shop on the property. The vehicle is a blue 2014 Polaris Sportsman 850cc, last seen with Manitoba license plate 6F393. Investigators are asking that if you see a vehicle matching this description you contact your local police detachment with its whereabouts. DRUNK DRIVER NABBED
The Portage la Prairie RCMP were patrolling the area of 9th Street NW and 5th Avenue W on March 29, when they came upon a vehicle being driven in an odd manner. The officer noticed also that the vehicle was unregistered and so the vehicle was stopped. Once in contact with the female driver (20 years old), investigators quickly determined that she was displaying several signs of intoxication. The driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle, with her subsequent breath samples being over the legal limit. The driver was release from police custody after a short time, set to appear in court at a later date.

BYTE-ME BREAK-IN
An alarm brought police and staff to Byte-Me Computers on Saskatchewan Avenue shortly after midnight March 30. A male suspect had broken the glass door to the business and managed to steal a small amount of cash. WANTED MAN AT LARGE
Treherne RCMP were patrolling St Claude shortly after 10:00 p.m. March 31, when they observed a Chrysler 300 driving erratically through the parking lot of Tall Boys Bar and Grill. The vehicle was then observed travelling nearly triple the posted speed limit through the community. After only a few minutes the vehicle was abandoned by a male driver. Despite the best efforts of local police and the police services dog, the suspect evaded capture that night. The investigation continued and officers have identified the suspect as Matthew Joseph Heintz (28 years old) of St Claude, Manitoba. Heintz is presently at large on charges of operating a motor vehicle while being pursued, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and driving while prohibited. MISCHIEF ARREST
Amaranth RCMP received a call of a suspicious person sneaking around a home on Helgason Avenue in Langruth on April 1. The home owner was able to see the suspect digging around inside their vehicle and called police. Officers arrived shortly thereafter, where they arrested a 23 year old male for theft of a motor vehicle and mischief. The male was released from police custody after a short time, set to appear before the court at a later date.

SPEEDY DRIVING
On April 1, a motorist was observed travelling at 134 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Hwy 16. The male driver (19 years old) was issued a fine in the amount of $508.75.
