A new drug awareness program will be hitting Stonewall's schools soon.

The RCMP approached Stonewall Council with the idea, and Mayor Lockie McLean says they want to start a partnership with Community Safety Net to help spread drug awareness.

"What they want to do is present drug safety, smart choices for life, to educate the students in schools in town. They're going to have a book that they can present to the students with an interactive DVD. It'll provide the youth in the schools with some of the tools to avoid drug use, what to be aware of, and what to stay away from. It'll also, with this booklet, help the parents know what to look out for."

He says the Town of Stonewall helped out with the costs.

"We sponsored it. We gave a serious sponsor of $900, which is a lot of money, but it's a good program. It's something that's new and we have no idea what drugs are out there, but the RCMP certainly do, and to educate the kids what to look for and the parents, it's just a positive thing for the community."

McLean adds the RCMP will be able to give students, teachers, and parents the tools and knowledge to avoid drug use.
