Twelve impaired drivers were picked up by the RCMP this past week in the Central Plains Region.

Community Liaison Officer Constable Sean O'Keefe explains they were on high alert for impaired drivers.

"Our initiative over the past weekend was targeted mainly at impaired drivers. So taking place predominantly in the early morning hours when people are out and about. We did have a high rate of contact with impaired drivers this past week unfortunately."

O'Keefe says there are different ways they can combat impaired driving.

"We had several check stops set up around the Central Plains area. Our officers were also looking for any signs up impairment like weaving lanes, driving without the required headlights, and any reason to come into contact with vehicles over the past weekend. Also, we're permitted here to ensure that anyone behind the wheel is not impaired and that's why we use roadside screening devices."

He says with the Holiday Season approaching it's best to make plans to arrive home safe.

"A lot of the times impaired driving is one of those avoidable instances. Making prior arrangements to get home, especially during the holiday season, we've got wonderful operations like Operation Red Nose starting up here shortly here in November. For a small donation, you can get your car home and you arrive home safe and sound. We understand people want to have fun over the holiday season, but making sure it's a happy and safe one is a much better approach."

He adds they're out there to protect drivers, and urges people to not drink and drive.
