Those who take advantage of Arborg's walking trails may notice some updates to the path system in the near future. This week the town's council approved two new bridges to allow pedestrians to cross the Icelandic River, one on each side of the community. Mayor Randy Sigurdson says they've approved a contract for the work, which should be done this summer.

"What we did was contract with a local machine shop here. We looked at the designs this week, and its very, very encouraging. We've given them the go-ahead to move forward with those two bridges."

Sigurdson says the bridge on the west side of Arborg is well-used by the public, but its age is starting show and it's in need of replacement. Meanwhile the east side bridge, which allows pedestrians to reach the Heritage Village across the river, will also be replaced. Sigurdson says the walking paths are a great aspect of the town, and feels it's vital they keep them looking their best.

"It's part of the whole picture for the town. We've always been very concerned about the walking trails, the sidewalks, and so on and so forth. This is just part of that piece that we're going to be working on this year."

The town's walking paths also received some rejuvenation last year. They were able to asphalt the path between River Road and Crosstown Avenue, after receiving $25,087 in funding from the federal government.
